Murder Comes By Mail

The man wanted to die. Michael stopped him. The last thing the man Michal saved said was, “you’ll wish you pushed me.” And after opening a letter addressed to him, Michael was wishing that he wasn’t strong enough to stop the man, or that he hadn’t gotten there in time, or better yet, he was nowhere near the bridge.

But he was.

You’ll wish you pushed me, the man had hissed, laying on the cement, still alive.

Michael did. With all his heart, he wished he did.

Murder Comes By Mail is the second book in the Hidden Springs Mystery series by A. H. Gabhart. (Click here for the author website.) Ann Gabhart has been writing since she was ten years old. Her first novel, A Forbidden Yearning, was published by Warner Books in 1978. She’s been writing ever since.

Quick review:

A one time read with interesting characters, a light touch of romance, and an ever-changing plot. If you see it in the library, don’t pass it by! Will make a nice winter read.

What I liked about the book:

The characters look simple in the beginning. But they aren’t. The layers keep peeling back more and more, finally giving realistic and personable characters.

I liked the plot as well. One piece after another, it kept you on your toes. The murder, what you think, all of it will end up shattered. I don’t know about you, but I love that in a mystery book.

What I didn’t like about the book:

The dialog. In all honesty, the dialog bored me towards the end. It got a little repetitive, a little dull. Not enough to make me put down the book at all, but enough to disappoint me.

Michael and Alexandria disappointed me a bit too. Their romance was… strained and unbelievable. They kept having the same problems that the book informs you they’ve had their entire adult lives. And yet they seemed too entwined to ever fully let go and too different to ever fully join together.

Who I would recommend this to:

Anyone who wants an ever changing mystery plot. Parents, there is death and murder, so use discretion before letting your younger children read. If you don’t like romance, but want an adult mystery, this book will be fine. Michael and Alex are such a small part of the overall story…
