“We heard the farmer talking while we were eating!!” One exclaimed.
“Oh yes,” Another one moaned. “He said that he was going to ask for some help to harvest the field.”
“Momma!!” A third one exclaimed. “We must leave now!!”
Momma Mouse thought about it and shook her head. “Not yet,” she told her frightened children. “Not yet.”
Several days later, the baby mice ran in again. “Momma! Momma! I heard the farmer and his son talking!! They’re trying to set up a date with other ranchers for help harvesting!! We gotta go, Momma! We gotta go now!!”
Momma Mouse thought about it for a minute, then shook her head. “No, not yet.” She said, rather calmly. “Not yet.”
A week went by and no one came to harvest the field, just like Momma Mouse had predicted. But once again, the youngsters ran in, quite fearful.
“Momma!! We heard the farmer talking. He said that his son and him going to have to do it themselves this very week!”
Momma looked around at them suspiciously. “Are you sure that’s what he said?”
“Oh yes, Momma,” they all assured her. “That’s what he said.”
Momma jumped up and ran for the door. “Time to go!” She hollered over her shoulder.
Sometimes, when you want things done, you just gotta do them yourself.
